Indonesia is tied 1-1 with host Hong Kong after the first day of play for the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group II at Victoria Park.

The visitors took the lead on Friday night when Christopher Rungkat won straight sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 over Nicholas Sayer in a match that was delayed by almost an hour because of heavy rainfall.

Jonathan Chu, though, leveled the score for Hong Kong as he beat David Agung Susanto 6-3, 6-0, 6-4 in the second singles match.

Christopher will play again in today’s doubles match with partner Aditya Hari Sasongko against Chu and Jack Hui, while the reverse singles matches are scheduled for Sunday.

Indonesia’s men’s team, ranked No. 55 in the world, has never lost against Hong Kong in five meetings at the Davis Cup.

Whoever wins this one will advance to the second round for a showdown against either Sri Lanka or Thailand.

As of press time, Thailand led 1-0 over host Sri Lanka after Kittipong Wachiramanowong took a 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Dineshkanthan Thangarajah in Colombo on Friday.

Elsewhere, straight set wins for Lleyton Hewitt and Bernard Tomic on Friday gave Australia a 2-0 lead over China in Asia/Oceania Group I.

Veteran two-time grand slam winner Hewitt beat China’s top-ranked men’s player Zhang Ze, while Tomic saw off rising youngster Wu Di.

“One day I hopefully can win the Davis Cup,” said Tomic, 19, after his 6-4, 7-6 (3), 6-3 victory over world No. 502 Wu at the Geelong Lawn Tennis Club.

Seasoned Davis Cup campaigner Hewitt, who reached the fourth round of last month’s Australian Open along with Tomic, said Wu’s form was better than his ranking.

“Wu is the best 500 player I’ve ever seen,” he said.

Hewitt defeated Zhang 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 (4) and will now hope to win the tie when he partners with Chris Guccione in a doubles match on Saturday.

Uzbekistan’s Davis Cup team took an early lead against host New Zealand in Tauranga on Friday, convincingly winning the first two rubbers to go up 2-0.
