Malaysia’s opposition Islamic party protested on Monday against a pop band’s upcoming concert in the mostly Muslim country, branding it a “grave insult” to Muslims who are observing the fasting month of Ramadan.

The youth wing of the Pan Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) slammed the government for approving the concert by Danish band Michael Learns to Rock scheduled for Sept. 5.

“This concert will certainly bring idle people out and destroy their morals,” PAS Youth chief, Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi, said in a statement.

More than half of Malaysia’s population of 27 million are Muslims.

Since 2007, PAS has campaigned against performances by foreign artists such as Beyonce, Rihanna, Gwen Stefani and Avril Lavigne.

Beyonce was forced to cancel her concert while Gwen Stefani and Avril Lavigne went ahead with their performances.

Star Planet, the organiser of the Michael Learns to Rock concert, was not immediately available for comment.

The PAS has also legislated hudud laws calling for amputation, stoning and whipping for criminal offences in the northeastern states of Kelantan and Terengganu which it controlled in the 1990s. But the party failed to win federal government approval.

There have been recent international criticisms that Malaysia is becoming too hardline.
