Tonga’s attorney general said on Friday he was quitting over government attempts to destroy judicial independence and interfere with legal action over a ferry disaster that killed 74 people.

Australian John Cauchi was appointed as the Pacific island kingdom’s first independent attorney general last year. He said the government had transferred most of his duties to the justice minister or the cabinet and appointed a judge without consulting him.

He also said the government was interfering with attempts to prosecute those found responsible by a commission of inquiry for a ferry sinking in August last year.
